Kombucha Is Halal in Indonesia. In Malaysia, It's Not. Both Sides Did Their Homework.

I run BridgifyAsia. We help businesses and manufacturers navigate Indonesian halal certification. One question comes up more than you'd expect: is kombucha halal?

Kombucha ferments, and fermentation produces trace ethanol. I used to think this was a simple "check the percentage" question. It isn't, and digging into it gave me a lot more respect for the reasoning behind these rulings.

🇮🇩 Indonesia, under MUI Fatwa No. 10 of 2018, treats a beverage as halal if ethanol stays under 0.5% ABV, the alcohol isn't intentionally added as an intoxicant, and it's medically harmless. It's one of the few halal authorities with an explicit numeric threshold written into a public fatwa.

🇲🇾 Malaysia's JAKIM is widely reported at a more lenient 1% ABV threshold. Worth double checking against their current published standard directly, since I'm working from secondary sources on that exact figure. Here's what's interesting though: JAKIM has separately ruled that commercially produced kombucha specifically doesn't qualify as halal, because most commercial kombucha tests between 0.5% and 3% ABV, above even their own more generous number.

🇸🇬 Singapore's MUIS doesn't publish one blanket percentage for kombucha. They evaluate fermented beverages case by case.

What this tells me isn't "shop around for the most lenient authority." It's the opposite. Each of these bodies has done its own serious technical and religious work to land where it landed, and the differences reflect genuine reasoning, not inconsistency. Sharing this as my own working understanding, not religious advice. If you're certifying a fermented product, go verify with the relevant authority directly.
