The Certification Manufacturers Forget Until Their Shipment Gets Stuck at Customs

Everyone preparing for Indonesia asks me about halal. Almost nobody asks me about SNI until it's already a problem.

SNI, Standar Nasional Indonesia, is Indonesia's national standard, and it's a separate mandatory certification for a specific list of product categories, independent of halal status. A product can be perfectly halal certified and still get legally blocked at Indonesian customs for lacking mandatory SNI compliance.

The line I hear most: "SNI is just a quality mark, it's optional if my product is already good."

The reality is different. For products on Indonesia's mandatory SNI list, which includes various electronics, toys, food products, and building materials among others, SNI is a legal gate to market entry, not a voluntary quality signal. No SNI mark where required means no customs clearance, regardless of how good the product actually is.

For manufacturers building an Indonesia market entry plan: SNI and halal are two separate regulatory tracks, often with different testing, different agencies, and different timelines. Treating them as one bundled "Indonesia compliance" checkbox is exactly how shipments end up sitting in port while someone scrambles to fix paperwork after the fact.

Plan for both from day one, not one after the other once a problem surfaces. SNI product lists and requirements change, so always confirm current mandatory status for your specific product category directly with BSN or the relevant ministry.
